so I’m forgetful, and only did 2 blogs last month, that means i need to send 10k more to charity. I’ll be searching for charities at some point in the next few weeks, and if anyone has any recommendations please post them here or pm me on twoplustwo. If the sites are still matching donations for haiti or red cross or something i’ll donate there since double the $$ sounds sweet. At some point in my life i’d like to get fairly involved in some charity stuff, but its unlikely that happens anytime too soon, so for the short term finding a suitable charity to donate to will have to do.

I’m in san fransisco for the day, and have a bunch of friends here i haven’t seen in a while, along with one of my best friends from college, so im hoping to grab lunch with her and have a big dinner before heading back to vegas. I played isildur right after blogging yest, and won about 900k- so that was pretty sweet. So far this year’s going a lot better than 2009 did, although it wouldve been pretty tough to match my 09 for poker downswings. Also i woke up this morning to find out phil galfond won 1.6m yesterday, so i was pretty stoked to hear that. He’s one of my best friends, and a super cool guy- along with obviously being an amazing poker player, and i know 09 didnt go ideally for him either, but it seems like this year is starting off a bunch better.

Thats all i got for now, and im too hungry to edit this- so hopefully its legible,
Tom

Just keep posting and winning big :D

Big fan of yours, but you should stop this charity talk. You mean well but it looks really bad to talk about donating 10k in one paragraph (as self-imposed “punishment” for not writing more blogs) to Haiti or other urgent causes and winning 900k in the next. If you’re going to donate half your winnings, that’s worth mentioning. 1% makes you look bad. And giving to charity because you wouldn’t have to were you to write more blogs isn’t very seemly either. It’s like the rich dropping breadcrumbs to the poor… and they wouldn’t even have to do that if they just remembered to write in their diary a couple times more that month.

Alex why would you go a read someones blog just to hate on them? Haters going to hate I know its in your envies nature. With that said 10K is a lot of money to any charity.
Tom keep up the good work, and Alex keep on hating.

I agree with Alex, I think the 10k to charity thing does not look good from a publicity point of view, but I also agree with Clarkey that charities don’t really care where or why the money comes in, so it’s a good thing…

I think a real motivator for Dwan would be taking away a bit of his time, not his money, so maybe agreeing to coach someone for an hour, or play an hour at the micros and chat to players might be more appropriate.

Give money to charity as well, but just coz, not because you didn’t write enough blogs.

10k is great, but from someone who loses 10k on prop bets in between hands for hundreds of thousands of dollars, it’s the equivalent of most of us sending a couple of pennies. For the record, I sent 20k to Haiti… and I can guarantee I have pennies in my pocket versus Tom.

But I’m not a hater… my first line in my previous entry was I’m a big fan of Tom’s. I’m sure he’s a great guy too. But read the responses to his first blog about the 10k charity thing…. I’m not alone. It plays bad despite good intentions. He should donate a heck of a lot more… or avoid the topic.

Tom, generosity in time or money is always appreciated and reciprocated by the universe, so I can understand why you are balancing them out with each other, I admire it.

To everyone else I think its very interesting that you are chastizing him being cavilier with money IRL while you admire him doing it while playing poker…

durrrr, ive been watching you play for years. if you are serious about donating 10k i know a place that would die if that kind of money were donated. i play poker full time and i work mondays at a soup kitchen in anchorage, ak. it would be amazing to have that kind of money donated. we are talking about expanding the building or building a new facility and that would be a HUGE donation. I would love to hear from you.

I totally agree with everything Alex has said. Makes complete sense. As much as I am a bit of a Durrrr fanboy, giving to charity should not be seen as a punishment.

I’m sure it was meant with good intentions though as Durrrr comes across as a really nice guy.

Might I suggest St. Bernard Project. Its founder won CNN’s Hero of the Year award last year, it helps in the rebuilding of homes from Hurricane Katrina. It would be helping domestically, there’s still a shit ton of work to be done in the South from the hurricane (rebuilding efforts estimated at 10 yrs until completion) and I can vouch that it’s really efficient with its donations and extremely well run. I volunteered w/ them for 3 months before I started playing poker full time. Obv. donating to Haiti or whatever else would be cool too, nice to hear you’re doing it.

If we all just donated a few bucks to charity these foundations would have more money than they’d know what to do with. I’d never critique a man for giving – every penny helps. And if he got even a couple of other people thinking about charity that wouldn’t have otherwise then that’s even more valuable than pretty much any amount of money.

  19. George Says:

any money donated to charity is welcome so people posting any negative comments please stfu. yes Tom won 900k in a single session but as he knows the next day you can lose double that or more. Tom keep up the blogs and ignore the haters, the rail has so many haters its sad – people that play 10nl+ that think they have a clue. GL + GG :)

Listen Alex buddy, if he were to donate half of his winnings, who would still be around to help out the different charities of the world? You have to help yourself sometimes in order to help others… durrrr explicitly stated that he feels it’s not enough and he’s looking to get involved in charities soon.

Just because you busted your life savings sending 20k to haiti doesn’t mean others have to go bankrupt and suffer like you do. This just means you won’t be able to make as much money back to help people in the future, whereas Tom still has the resources to continue his money making machine. Cheers Tom, a well deserved win buddy.

There is a group that a high school friend ofmine run’s called ambers angels, http://www.ambers-angels.org/, which basically helps out children who have cystic fibrosis, cancer and make their stay in the hospital more enjoyable by bringing them toys, and gift baggies and such.

Give a look through and see what you think, its no big named charity but she is a person who I think could really put 10k to good use or w/e amount.

But, ah, I must take that back, having once been homeless, and having even slept in Golden Gate Park, among a hundred other places, when I was your age. (I decided money was a joke; if only there had been online poker back then, I would have had another means to demonstrate that fact!) If I had 10K to throw around, I’d probably give it to Loaves and Fishes. Or, really, any charity that feeds the poor (although for all their advertisement and popularity, let me tell you, the Salvation Army and the United Way are BS charities). In my stubborn youth I would have proudly starved to death without there being an honest-to-God soup kitchen around somewhere. (I hitchhiked through Reno and got the “oh you must just be a busto gambler” treatment, I can only imagine Vegas is at least as bad, so, while I normally say “act locally” maybe find a soup kitchen in the mid-west or something….)

You are the man. Thanks for the updates–us grinders dig it. Donating is great man. When I have done it I try to find a cause that speaks to me personally–makes the whole deal more intimate and less like paying the water bill. For example, I have donated to the protection of elephants. Whatever you choose will be the best. Take care.

There’s a program (iCan) for helping inner-city kids in Los Angeles run by a non-profit called RenewLA. It’s small so every single dollar will be put to good use and anything you give will have a real tangible effect. They are organizing a charity golf tournament as well, which you can play in if interested and in the area. Here’s the website (with links to what they do as well):

I didn’t know who you were at the time and made my way close to where you were during a break just to hear the chatter. You were talking about the big games that had been running in the past few days. I totally sold you off as a fisherman telling a tall tale… maybe just an internet qualifier acting big. I have been around the highest limit players since the early 90’s and imo Tom is the most talented I’ve seen. With that being said I just participated in a walk for juvenile diabetes. I was part of a team that was assembled by a 10 year old sufferer. We had 230 walkers on our team and raised around $6000. Tom, we would be honored to receive your 10k. thanks for your great blog.
Great also that you are giving to charity. I’m donating myself to sightsavers (sightsavers.org): a UK based organisation with very little overhead costs that battles preventable blindness in third world countries. They estimate that every 10$ you donate will save one person from becoming blind, so I think that would be a very worthwile cause to donate to,

A charity I can wholeheartedly recommend is the Friends of Rwanda Association. It funds projects in (surprise!) Rwanda, and is run by ex-patriot Rwandans working in the U.S.

The (big) upside is that the organization is all-volunteer, with no paid staff, so funding given to them has a bigger impact than funding given elsewhere.

The downside is that FORA probably doesn’t have the infrastructure to put seven-figure donations to use.

I’m not affiliated with FORA, although I know many of the organizers. Their website is http://www.friends-of-rwanda.org.
